Design Topic 2: Your next design topic is to create a lingere look that can be used as underwear...AND outerwear. Even harder? You must make it based on one of the astrological signs. I will asign them to you: Aquarius
I'm quickly in terms of worktime and urgency, becomine the 'Daniel Franco' of this competition. I really labor over certain spects and up until the last straw, tweaking minute details. But that's my work. cjrojers...he's becoming the stressed Tim Gunn!
Lingerie as outer wear. A surprize I'm sure is that I've worked in a lingerie store before, which actually made decision making difficult. I had knowlege of various styles and forms of the intimate apparel, and the customers who bought them. So, really, all that knowlege gave me a tough time!
I'll start with my concept of Aquarius: Though associated with air, Aquarius is the 'water-bearer.' Symbolic of the Gods nourishing the earth with life giving energies. Friendly and humanitarian, honest and loyal, independent and intellectual describe aquarians.
I researched about its importance in greek belief, stories associated with the sign, parts of body controlled by it(the ankle), and then..."what am I doing?" The research was great but I wanted to let the work well, speak for it self. For those who haven't done all the research. So some of these things I learned are incorporated into the design, and then edited out. I wanted a garment INSPIRED by the topic, not to become a research project. This isn't Project Researcher.
The garment I created is in the vein of a Teddy, with an attaching billowy skirt. In earlier versions I had a babydoll(too common) and corset(again, too common). The overall design for me had to have the airy feel but, ofcouse, represent water bearer(note her clutch is similar to a vessel). Chiffon creates the bust and flow in the bodice, and I incorporated pillettes to give it sheen of perhaps a river. There are details made of silk, such as the straps, and included in the skirt which I experimented with veils and organza to mimic water splashing.
I'm happy with the out come. I think the silhouette is very sexy and independent, and as outer wear it comes off more honest and delicate.
-- I have always tried to design things that are unapologetically beautiful, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. If I can inspire an appreciation for grace and elegance, that would be the ultimate fulfillment of my life's ambition.
Love the flowy feel to it. Not only is it pretty and wearable, but I love the little Aquarian touches - the scale-like detail, the Aquarius sign on the back of her shoulder. ^_^
